Vivien’s 2023 Workshop – Setting the Scene

‘Scene’ can have many meanings, including world building. It could be a mythical world or
it could be real. It could be a whole planet, a house or just a room.

But we don’t always have to describe it. We can let our characters describe it for us as
they talk to each other or interact with the scenery itself. While communicating with each
other, they can also be telling us something about their own, or the other character’s,
personality.

The Workshop

1) Decided on two characters – one human, one non-human (eg vampire, Hellhound,
Goblin, Ghost etc)

2) Jot down (spider diagram, notes, list etc) some positive (eg loyalty, bravery) and some
negative (eg dishonesty, cruelty) traits for each one.

3) Put the two characters in a scene of your choice and see how they behave with each
other and/or with aspects of the place.

Think about how this interaction helps you understand something about the characters and
their world.
